Here we go, in no particular order.

Tom Waits: Bad As Me. Initially I was disappointed this wasn't stronger, this being his first new material in seven years. But I found myself enjoying it anyway. What more matters?

The Pack A.D.: Unpersons. Two-girl garage-punk band kickass album of the year.

Limes: Tarantula! Sort of a slacker Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, which makes for a fun listen.

Silos: Florizona. Walter S. and friends back with a mighty fine collection that doesn't break much new ground but jumps out of the speakers.

Lydia Loveless: Indestructible Machine. Kickass drunk-young-female-alt country album of the year. Great voice.

Art Brut: Brilliant! Tragic! Critics didn't like this much but I truly enjoyed the Black Francis production (Pixies sound) mixed with the witty/ wacky lyrics and singing

Felice Brothers: Celebration, Florida These guys totally surprised by advancing their material beyond alt country roots, into some mighty fine, deep tunes.

TV On the Radio: Nine Types of Light I played this one the loudest and longest on my car stereo. One of the best concerts I ever experienced when they came to the Pabst.

The Kills: Blood Pressures Like the Tom Waits CD, it took me a while to warm up to this, but it's a solid album with the exception of one track where the guy sings.

PJ Harvey: Let England Shake Every PJ album is an event and in this case it's haunting, heartfelt and, as always, in a class of its own.

Kickstarter Fatty Acids Bunnyman night

It was a full ticket Wednesday night with two hours of the regular Showgram -- along with pitches for "keep live music on wmse" (at wmse.org), a live performance by the Fatty Acids (to promote Kickstarter campaign for live music equipment) and an appearance by Bunnyman on the 80s at 8:30. I'm declaring it summer and the calendar says so too. I played my annual "Summer of the Drugs" -- a Victoria Williams song performed by Soul Asylum. I did not do any drugs, just a showgram. The WZMF tapes went over well with listeners on last night's showgram, as did the late '70s stuff and, gosh darn it, the 80s at 8:30. We raised more than $1,500. Thanks to those of you who made pledges. The identity of my 80's 'desert island discs' can now be revealed. As I said on the air, I simply went with the first three that came to mind without too much deep thinking. They are, in no particular order: The Smithereens "Especially for You," X's "Wild Gift" and the Replacements "Let It Be." I will join Richard next Wednesday night during Alt Farm Rock for the spring pledge drive. I also will make an appearance next Monday morning with Brent and Pat on the Monday morning drive time show.

ZMF (!), the late '70s, '80s keepers

By God, it must be the WMSE spring pledge drive and I must be preparing for a special showgram. I decided to play some of the cassette recording from the last night of WZMF-FM (98.3) on March 23, 1979 and other tunes from the late 70s -- the years leading up to the birth of WMSE in 1981. That will happen between 6 pm and 8:30pm Wednesday night April 27. On the '80s at 8:30 I will feature two or three "desert island discs (actually LPs)." They're only somewhat deep and not entirely surprising but you will need to tune in to get the scoop. See you then.

(John Doe) and Jill Sobule at Shank

Let me start my discussion of the John Doe/ Jill Sobule show Monday night at Shank Hall by saying Jill Sobule is a talented, appealing, smart, compelling singer/ songwriter and guitarist. Her material is strong its own right, but I was there to see John Doe and unfortunately I got about 45 percent John and 55 percent Jill. Their harmonizing and interplay was entertaining and added a nice dimension to the show. They also did several songs from their new joint CD “A Day at the Pass.” The turning point may have been about half way into the show when they asked for requests. The small audience of about 55 blurted out none for John (I inexplicably went blank despite owning many X and John Doe albums) and about a half-dozen for Jill. It was almost like John and Jill took that as a cue to do more Jill tunes. The closing song of the encore was Sobule’s 1996 hit “I Kissed a Girl.” Fun show but I would’ve liked to get more John and less Jill. I did get to chat with him for a minute after wards and he said he will be releasing a new solo disc in late summer/ early fall.

WMSE 30th celebration part II

Wednesday night, March 16 on the 80s at 8:30 I will feature two segments from a music talk show I did in 1982 with Divina Infusino, former rock critic at the Milwaukee Journal. It was called "Talk Talk." One segment will include a discussion with Lee Arnold, who was then program director at 93 WQFM. Second segment is just Divina and I "rapping" about The Clash and X and whatever.

Let the 'MSE 30th anniversary celebration begin

This week I did my first of three "special" '80s at 8:30 segments to mark WMSE's 30th anniversary, which officially is on March 17. I took the risk of playing cassettes of a couple shows I did on the station back when -- that would be 1981 and 1982. Next installment (March 16) will be a couple sections of the incredibly short-lived "music talk show" we called Talk Talk. Co-hosted by Divina Infusino of the Milwaukee Journal and yours truly. This is far from a definitive list. I haven't listened to all the new CDs released this year and I don't want to. This is really more a list of my favorites and stuff I thought was super cool.

In no particular order....

Bobby Bare Jr. -- A Storm - A Tree - My Mother's Head. Bobby's most consistent and rewarding album in a while. Backed by My Morning Jacket. Funny and deep and not serious and good.

Drive By Truckers -- The Big To-Do. If this world was right, this would have been a smash hit. A classic album with a variety of styles and great lyrics all in the general arena of DBT's gothic southern rock.

Black Angels -- Phosphene Dream. Best psychedelia from Texas since Roky Erickson. Loud and proud.

The Goodnight Loving -- Supper Club. These guys grow on me more all the time. Jangly and homespun. Their most consistent effort to date.

Galactic -- Yakamay. Live the funk. Feel the funk. Organic and modern all at once with variety of guest vocalists.

The Fall -- Your Future Our Clutter. Who woulda thought Mark E. Smith had this in him -- the brains to work with a kick-ass band that rocks its arse off while he warbles about ex-pats and other stuff.

Neil Young -- Le Noise. You either love Neil or you don't get him. If you love Neil, this features some might fine gee-tarr chords and nifty songs. New approach thanks to producer Daniel Lanois.

Deerhunter -- Halcyon Digest. Every tune I've heard on this is expertly crafted and delivered. Bradfod Cox rox.

Jaill -- That's How We Burn. I'm looking like a homer here with two Milwaukee bands on my list, but the first three tracks on this release were one of the best starts to any CD I heard this year. A few other gems on here, too. Straight ahead alt rock.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -- Beat the Devil's Tattoo. This one doesn't jump out at you like some of their previous works, but after numerous listens, it's got some great material.

It was 30 years ago today -- Playlist no. 1

It can't be true but I cannot tell a lie -- my first radio show on 91.7 FM in Milwaukee was 30 years ago this week. May 14, 1980 to be exact. It was on a Wednesday night from about 6:15 pm to 8 pm (seems I had a problem getting the transmitter started). The station was then known as WSOE and it was supposedly just an MSOE campus station but the signal carried a few miles beyond that. The DJ who was on after me was -- Jules! She started there in 1977 as an actual MSOE student DJ.
In honor (and horror) of my very first show, I listened to the tape and logged the playlist. It is eclectic, as they say. Oldies (they weren't on the radio at the time, so it was sort of cool), FM rock stuff (more like the late lamented WZMF than market leaders at the time WLPX and WQFM) -- oh, and some of the acts that 'MSE made famous in Milwaukee like the Jam, the Clash and Jonathan Richman. Here goes....

I could neither read my notes nor remember the name of the song I played Feb. 3 by Bear in Heaven (this happens when you have been a DJ for darn near, uhh, three decades).
Anyway, I've got it now and here it is: "Beast in Peace"
