Video of the week: PJ Harvey from my T25 list

PJ Harvey Big Exit

Top 25 favorites of the WMSE era

As my extra extra special special for the first night of the fall pledge drive was to play my top 25 artists of the WMSE era. Most of them started in the 80s, a couple-three in the 90s, a few in the 60s/ 70s. All but a couple have had long-running careers, which wiped out the flash-in-the-pans and many early punkers.  Here are the artists I played Wednesday night, in order of when I played them but in no particular ranking:

Mark Lanegan
Patti Smith
The Silos
Elvis Costello
Bobby Bare Jr.
The Eels
Chris Whitley
The Mekons
Paul Westerberg/ Replacements
Robyn Hitchcock
Kristin Hersh/ Throwing Muses
Alex Chilton
John Doe/ X
Morphine
Pat MacDonald
Lou Reed

PJ Harvey

Tom Waits
Sonic Youth

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Motorhead

City Rock special Oct. 24 for pledge drive

I am planning to play my 25 all-time favorite artists of the 'MSE era Wednesday night as the station kicks off the fall pledge drive. I will see if I can squeeze in two songs by each, but probably won't due to need to pitch. No 80s segment, but most of the artists got started in the '70s or 80s and continue rockin (unless they're dead).

Eve of the 80s / new trax Feb. 1

A couple of my recent guests on the 80s at 8:30 have commented that they wanted to play something but then figured out it was from '79. I told them we only play 80s on that segment. Then I stole their idea with the thought (which made it OK to steal) that they were on to something -- a lot of the stuff from the late 70s DID sound like 80s music. So last night, it was music from '78 and '79 that to me signaled the coming 80s decade. And besides, it was fun music.
