It's Not Christmas without the Ventures Christmas LP

I had to play the Ventures, which was a staple in my household during my junior high years (let the record show that was a number of years after the album was originally released. My mom bought a cutout). When it came out on CD in the '90s, I snapped it up.
The rest of this week's showgram included a bevy of new tracks and the '80s at 8:30 Christmas music with special guest Bunnyman.

Top 10 of 2010

This is far from a definitive list. I haven't listened to all the new CDs released this year and I don't want to. This is really more a list of my favorites and stuff I thought was super cool.

In no particular order....

Bobby Bare Jr. -- A Storm - A Tree - My Mother's Head. Bobby's most consistent and rewarding album in a while. Backed by My Morning Jacket. Funny and deep and not serious and good.

Drive By Truckers -- The Big To-Do. If this world was right, this would have been a smash hit. A classic album with a variety of styles and great lyrics all in the general arena of DBT's gothic southern rock.

Black Angels -- Phosphene Dream. Best psychedelia from Texas since Roky Erickson. Loud and proud.

The Goodnight Loving -- Supper Club. These guys grow on me more all the time. Jangly and homespun. Their most consistent effort to date.

Galactic -- Yakamay. Live the funk. Feel the funk. Organic and modern all at once with variety of guest vocalists.

The Fall -- Your Future Our Clutter. Who woulda thought Mark E. Smith had this in him -- the brains to work with a kick-ass band that rocks its arse off while he warbles about ex-pats and other stuff.

Neil Young -- Le Noise. You either love Neil or you don't get him. If you love Neil, this features some might fine gee-tarr chords and nifty songs. New approach thanks to producer Daniel Lanois.

Deerhunter -- Halcyon Digest. Every tune I've heard on this is expertly crafted and delivered. Bradfod Cox rox.

Jaill -- That's How We Burn. I'm looking like a homer here with two Milwaukee bands on my list, but the first three tracks on this release were one of the best starts to any CD I heard this year. A few other gems on here, too. Straight ahead alt rock.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -- Beat the Devil's Tattoo. This one doesn't jump out at you like some of their previous works, but after numerous listens, it's got some great material.

Honorable mentions: Gil Scott-Heron, Clinic, Walkmen, Sleigh Bells, Black Keys, Dum Dum Girls

It was 30 years ago today -- Playlist no. 1

It can't be true but I cannot tell a lie -- my first radio show on 91.7 FM in Milwaukee was 30 years ago this week. May 14, 1980 to be exact. It was on a Wednesday night from about 6:15 pm to 8 pm (seems I had a problem getting the transmitter started). The station was then known as WSOE and it was supposedly just an MSOE campus station but the signal carried a few miles beyond that. The DJ who was on after me was -- Jules! She started there in 1977 as an actual MSOE student DJ.
In honor (and horror) of my very first show, I listened to the tape and logged the playlist. It is eclectic, as they say. Oldies (they weren't on the radio at the time, so it was sort of cool), FM rock stuff (more like the late lamented WZMF than market leaders at the time WLPX and WQFM) -- oh, and some of the acts that 'MSE made famous in Milwaukee like the Jam, the Clash and Jonathan Richman. Here goes....

Rodney Crowell -- Here Come the '80s
Buffalo Springfield -- For What It's Worth
Bob Dylan -- The Times They Are a Changin
Bob Dylan -- Slow Train
Allman Brothers -- Can't Take it With You
Neil Young -- Powderfinger
Warren Zevon -- Jungle Work
The Jam -- Eton Rifles
The Clash -- Guns of Brixton
The Clash -- Death or Glory (unedited!)
Grin -- Moon Tears
Moon Martin -- Bad Case of Loving You
John Hiatt -- Madonna Road
Joe Jackson -- Sunday Papers
The Undertones -- Under the Boardwalk
Warren Zevon (request) -- Poor Poor Pitiful Me
Felix Cavaliere (solo) -- People Got To Be Free
The Animals -- It's My Life
The Turtles -- Elenore
Rolling Stones -- Under My Thumb
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes -- Baby's Gone for Good
Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers -- Important in Your Life
Lou Reed -- Vicious Circle
The Tourists -- All Life's Tragedies
Loudon Wainwright III -- Drinks Before Dinner
Squeeze -- Slightly Drunk
Bonnie Raitt -- Runaway (live)
Jo Jo Gunne -- Run Run Run

Anyway, I've got it now and here it is: "Beast in Peace"
I feel better now. Apologies to Bear in Heaven and its fans.

Typos and spelling

I apologize for a few spelling errors on Top 10 post. Also I meant that you should play Dino Jr. loud, not lound , whatever that is.
Rich

10 Best Faves of 2009

As always, this is subjective (of course) and limited to CDs I heard and listened to enough to recommend. I tried not to go too heavy on the geezer acts, but I can't help myself. These are in no particular order.

The xx. Self titled. Girl-guy vocals, understated, great melodies, young Brits. Has that deadpan modern semi-underground feel.

Dinosaur Jr. Farm. Second CD from the reunited original lineup kicks serious butt, if that's what you're into. Play lound.

Sonic Youth. The Eternal. Another long-time act kickin it in their best original style. More raw due to non-corporate approach, and great songs.

Jarvis Cocker. Further Complications. I probably played this as much as anything on the radio this year. Droll lyrics, rockin band and production and Jarvis' inimatble vocal stylings.

Fiery Furnaces. I'm Going Away. At first, I was put off by some of the newly mellow approach, but it grew on me. Where previous efforts were somewhat fingernails-on-chalkboard, this one is mostly palatable.

Viva Voce. Rose City. May not have all-time best Viva Voce tracks, but its their most consistent from start to finish, song for song. Enough rock and moodiness to roll on.

The Heartless Bastards. The Mountain. I caught the Heartless Bastards bug this summer and it was stuck in the CD player for weeks. The sometimes-desparate, sometimes-strong vocals, simple arrangements and basic strumming struck the right balance of, my God, grunge light and, God help me, World Cafe (I heard it there once, which almost ruined the album for me).

PJ Harvey & John Parish. A Woman A Man Walked By. When PJ is on, as she always is when working with Mr. Parish, she's incredible. Not her best work but very high quality stuff. If you like PJ.

The Handsome Family. Honey Moon. This husband-wife duo was a bit stuck in their mellow alt / goth country formula for a few albums but this one tried some new tricks and was recorded with some Caliexico cats.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's Blitz. They refuse to get pigeonholed, de-emphasizing the guitar but still keeping the glam rock (can a female be glam?) flame scorching.

Honorable mentions: The Eels, King Khan, Art Brut, Felice Brothers, Spiral Beach, Grizzly Bear, The Ettes, the Crocodiles, the White Rabbits.
